During this program, I have developed a teaching competency as a counselor educator. A significant aspect of teaching is learning how to facilitate adult learning. I have learned that it is essential to be adaptable by responding to different learning styles, cultural perspectives, and dynamics. I have realized that it is necessary to create an environment that is collaborative and fosters inclusivity through conversations. My teaching style has developed since starting the program, and that will continue throughout my career.
I have developed an ability to build trust and rapport with students. I want students to feel comfortable asking questions and taking professional risks by challenging themselves and stepping out of their comfort zones. I also want them to come to me when they feel like they made mistakes, so we can explore how they can improve. I strive to foster growth in my students. I want students to learning how to become an effective counselor and develop their counselor identity.
One area of growth has been to continue developing confidence in my identity as a counselor. I feel competent in my knowledge as a counselor educator, but I have moments of self-doubt while addressing the needs in the classroom. I have now realized that I can be confident, but that does not necessarily mean that I need to have every answer. I can be confident by being prepared and being willing to continue growing as an educator. To continue developing, I want to find a professional mentor who is working at the same university and can collaborate with me. I can learn a lot from others who have done it before me. As long as I am willing to continue growing, I can build confidence in the classroom.
Jesus was the ultimate teacher, and I see teaching as a tremendous honor and responsibility. Jesus was patient, compassionate, and humble. He also maintained these traits even when correcting. Christ both equipped and empowered those that he led. I can live out my faith daily as a counselor educator, regardless of whether I am at a religious or secular institution, through the way I interact with my students.
